URINETOWN from 11th November 2009, Roundhouse Theatre |
music & lyrics by MARK HOLLMANN book and lyrics by GREG KOTIS
One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, URINETOWN is an hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold.
In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he's had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!
Featuring Harvest Rain's 2009 Interns and directed by Tim O'Connor, URINETOWN is a humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Winner of three Tony Awards, URINETOWN has been praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be!
Don’t miss Harvest Rain Theatre Company’s first production at the Roundhouse Theatre. Five performances only!

What the critics have said....
Sue Gough from The Courier Mail says "The production is an ideal vehicle for 25 of Harvest Rain's young interns, who are smartly directed by Tim O'Connor and snappily choreographer by Jo Heath. Cliche characters are slickly satirised, songs in every musical genre are belted out with ironic gusto and several stars emerge - most notably Hannah King as Hope, who sings like an angel while sending herself up. Vicki Millar is terrific as Lancashire strumpet Pennywise, who could have strayed from Sweeney Todd and Shane McLennan is in great voice as the despicable Caldwell B. Cladwell."
Johanna Shriver from Scene Magazine says "I found the entire production delightful. The cast was excellent, with Rickie Crane (Officer Lockstock), Shaun Kohlman (Bobby Strong), Hannah King (Hope Cladwell), Shane McLennan (Caldwell B. Cladwell), and Vicki Millar (Penny Pennywise) all giving strong performances. I also found the performance of Tyson Stuetz (Mr. McQueen) hilarious; his commitment to his role was complete and enthusiastic. The dancing was awesome, ranging from the Broadway kick line to ballet, and everyone did a great job. Director Tim O'Connor did a great job with the satirical side of the show, really bringing the comic qualities out. The band did a great job with the music and I just thought that everything from costumes to set to lighting was very good. Everyone in the cast seemed to be having fun, and we as the audience were having fun right along with them."
